Rifle Sheaths - Indian Style
Native
Americans are masters at making useful
leather clothing and covers, and have refined their abilities
over thousands of years. The mountain men who were the first
whites to wander the wild places of the west, soon learned
the value of fine leather work from the Indians. The Mountain
Men, Trappers and Scouts either traded, learned how, or
took a native wife or "squaw" who made them beautiful
leather and fur clothes and covers.
Each Indian tribe has its own unique beadwork designs they
decorate their hide and leather with. Experts can tell which
tribe and at what period in their history the beadwork is
from. The Searcher's is set in North Texas circa
1868; which leads us to believe the sheath {our version
shown at left} Ethan Edwards carries is Comanche.
We
promise to make no two custom pieces exactly the same -
and our originality and individuality bring clients back
time and again to our order catalogue. Like all our custom
leather, cowboy hats, and knives, our Indian style rifle
sheaths or scabbards are made in the Black Hills of South
Dakota. Basic :: Good

RIFLE SHEATH ADDED JULY
2010
THE RED PHOENIX - Our
version of the Indian Rifle Sheath carried by the Duke
in The Searchers {1956}. The beadwork is custom
made for us by a Lakota Sioux craftswoman. The hide is
milky soft and the long, spaghetti fringe gives it a dramatic
look. Any fine rifle deserves a spectacular sheath.
Set
right after the Civil War in North Texas,
The Searchers is a powerful story, with Wayne giving
a commanding performance. In the movie Ethan Edwards
is carrying an 1866 Henry Repeating Arm in this rifle
sheath.
The sheath is just long enough to cover the rifles'
action. We will custom make to fit your specific firearm.
Once your order is placed, we will e-mail you within 24
hours to confirm order details, and confirm your firearms
dimensions.

All
our Cowboy leather has been researched and designed; tried and tested
by Longfellow in Old West Shows
and at Cowboy Action Shoots. ALL OUR HOLSTERS ARE LINED.
Our gunbelt backs are suede so the belt stays where it is buckled.
We try to stay as true to the old west makers as we can, and have
incorporated what we found works over years of wear and use. Custom

Buckskin
Fact
Buckskin clothing and covers virtually always had a fringe attached.
Why is that? Most folks think it was for show - but like most
things cowboys used - the fringe on a buckskin jacket, shirt,
knife, or rifle sheath had a function - it channeled water off
the garment - keeping it dryer - and after it was wet, allowing
it to dry faster. Just another adaption copied from the Native
American Indians.
Basic
Leather and Buckskin Care
When
wet - allow the leather to dry naturally at room temperature.
If stained use a mild mix of dish soap and water and clean carefully
with a clean cloth. Commercial cleansers and chemicals should
NOT be used, or they may cause discoloring. In the first year
the natural oils in the hide should keep it fairly weather repellent.
After that we recommend using a spray protector like Tandy,
or Mink Oil, which is an excellent protector for leather (NOT
buckskin: it will cause matting if used) mink oil will condition
the leather and waterproof it to a certain extent.

LEATHER
COVERED CANTEEN
Stainless
steel body with cloth wrap and then more insulation from
the custom leather cover. Mouth piece and cap are plastic.
IMPORTANT:
Any canteen liner can crack from freezing if left full,
with the cap on tight. If you leave the canteen out in freezing
weather; have 2/3rds or less fluid in it and leave the cap
off. When water thaws it expands, and if you follow these
2 simple rules your canteen liner should not crack, should
the water in it freeze.

Leather
Wrist Cuffs
Hard
working cowboys valued heavy leather cuffs for protecting
their shirts, wrists and lower arm when working with cattle.
When worn with a good pair of leather gloves, the cuffs
perfectly protect a cowboys hands and wrists from rope burn,
and the stiff cuffs act as a brace; preventing wrist sprains.
Cuff A is shown in our signature color: Deadwood
Brown, and is tied off at the back with lace, and a snap.
Cuff B has studs and a basket weave design, in a
saddle tan color, and is also tied at the back with lace
and a snap. Cuff C is in saddle brown, with our Last
Best West Brand on the cuff. Closed at the back with lace
and a buckle, and design C can be customized with
your own simple brand design. Nothing too complicated please!
Order in Small (8 1/2") Medium (9") or Large
( 9 1/2") To determine size measure your wrist circumference
at the spot where you wear your watch. All order details
are confirmed within 1 business day of your order being

Leather
is an important material to cowboys.
It wears hard, is like a second skin, and early cowboys
soon learned how to work leather to make hardy leather garments
to do their jobs better; protect their clothes, and make
their lives easier.
The leather we use for our custom chaps and leather accessories
is top quality, and will stand the test of time.

these oversized saddle bags with all your business gear;
throw them over your shoulder and walk a city block or two.
You'll never go back to carrying a briefcase. The heavy
leather bags can easily hold most anything, including your
lap top, legal size folders, binders, note books, and cables.
Inside you will find sleeves to hold your wallet, pens,
or even a memory stick. We've even put a cell phone sleeve
on the outside neck, and a heavy duty handle for easy carrying.
Cowboy
Action Shooters will
find these oversized saddle bags just the thing to carry
all your cowboy action tools. You can easily store a gunbelt;
two holsters; spurs, wild rags and ammo. And that's just
in one side. On the other side you can carry a two pistol
case and more ammo, and in most cases when the flaps are
locked the bags are legal for firearm transport. Further
customization of the bags is possible, and is only limited
by your imagination.
