Rifles in the Old West

While the six-gun was the weapon of choice on the silver screen Western, in the real West it was a different story.

The revolver was a handy weapon in the old west and helped to tame the land, but it was the long gun—be it rifle or shotgun—that was among the most important tools of the pioneer. The vast expanses of wild, unfriendly wilderness that made up much of the continent during the period of our westward expansion required that a man be well armed in order to survive. In remote regions, a traveler needed to be able to feed, clothe and protect himself and that required skill with a rifle or shotgun. The land could be hostile, and food scarce.  Towns and communities were few and far between. Without a rifle these cowboys of the Old West would not have been able to eat or defend themselves from both animals and hostiles.
