History of Cowboy Leather

Open Range Chaps

Working Cowboys from the 1880s; like Charley from Open Range lived in their chaps.

Open Range Leather is an important material to cowboys. It wears hard, is like a second skin, and early cowboys soon learned how to work leather to make hardy leather garments to do their jobs better; protect their clothes, and make their lives easier.

The leather we use for our Open Range Handmade Leather Chaps and leather accessories is top quality, and will stand the test of time.

The film, Open Range, is set in 1882. “Boss” Spearman (Duvall) is an open range cattleman, who, with hired hands Charley (Costner), Mose (Benrubi) and Button (Luna), is driving a herd cross country. Charley is a former soldier who fought in the Civil War and feels guilty over his past as a killer.

Boss sends Mose to the nearby town of Harmonville for supplies. The town is controlled by a ruthless Irish immigrant land baron, Denton Baxter (Gambon), who hates open-rangers. Mose is badly beaten and jailed by the marshal, Poole (Russo). The only friendly inhabitant is Percy (Jeter), a livery stable owner. Baxter and his thugs go after the herd of cattle and the fight is on. Charley’s Hat ~  Charley’s Rig

In 2012 we were honored to be asked to reproduce the hat (modified Curly Bill Custom Cowboy Hat), chaps (modified open range), and cartridge belt (our 3 inch), shown at being worn by 1870s cowboy, Nat Love, for the Smithsonian Museum of American History, in Washington.

Hello Longfellow and Sonja!

Xavier Carnegie here, just writing to thank you for your amazing work on our gear pieces at the Smithsonian Institution for our program “Love on the Range,” featuring historic cowboy Nat Love. Everything you folks made, from the beautiful custom hat, to the leather chaps and gunbelt, have been fantastic.

Attached is a reenactment photo of the famous Nat Love photo I sent you months ago as the blueprint for the gear, with myself as the actor, which was taken by someone in our Media Department, and digitally manipulated for an 1800s effect. I submit it to you, with all the gratitude I can muster for your expertise and guidance in this process!

Correct Gun Belt or Pants Belt Measurement

If you want to keep it simple your belt size is
almost always about 4 inches larger than your jean size.
Ex: If you wear a
size 40 jean you would order a 44 inch belt.

correct gunbelt measurement

correct gunbelt measurement

Getting the correct gun belt measurement is easy if you follow some simple steps.

  1. Put on a pair of britches/pants you plan to wear with your gun belt

  2. Have handy any belt that currently fits you. You can even use a piece of string.

  3. Put the belt on and buckle it where you will wear your gun belt Slightly down over your hips in most cases. Remember the gun belt will be supporting another 4 pounds per pistol and holster {about 3 lbs for the pistol; 1 lb for the holster} That weight will drag the belt down. You may want to go another notch tighter in your measuring.

  4. Make note of the most comfortable hole in which the buckle goes through.

  5. Lay the belt on a flat surface and measure from the end of the buckle to the most comfortable hole. See picture below.

  6. Distance from the buckle end to the centre hole of your belt will be the measurement you supply us with. This is now your gun-belt size.

  7. Generally this measurement should be about 3 to 4 inches larger than your jean size.

Custom Chap Measurements
The fit of your custom chaps will only be as good as the measurements you supply us with. So please take due care. For accurate measurements you must have someone else measure you as you stand still and look straight ahead.

Very important that you have on a pair of britches and boots that you plan to wear under your chaps. Always a good idea to measure twice to confirm each measurement.

All details of your custom leather order are confirmed within
1 business day of your order being received.

Chaps that use buckles and straps will have some forgiveness; but step in chaps like our Open Range Style are designed to be form fitting – so for best results
be thorough with your measurements.
