The Hayden Expedition, surveyed, mapped, charted and photographed the Yellowstone area that would eventually become the first US National Park. In 1872 the National Parks Act was signed by President U.S. Grant making Yellowstone the first National Park in the World. Rail access into the Park began in 1883, and automobiles were allowed in in 1915. By 1948 the Park had received over a million visitors.
