Tuscarora Suede Coat

The Tuscarora Suede coat was a style worn by Frontiersmen and Scouts in the Old West.

With a stand up collar and a raw hem this coat is a fashion reminder of an earlier time. And still a smart look today as a suit coat. Try boots and Jeans, a hat, shirt and tie under the Tuscarora and turn your co workers heads!

Two of our designs, Crockett and Tuscarora are frock coat length, at 34 inches. Today that length of coat is referred to as a car coat. But in reality it’s cowboy length!

Our coat is named in honor of the Tuscarora Indian Tribe, a member of the six tribe Iroquois Confederacy. Other member tribes included the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and Mohawk.

The Confederacy occupied territory that covered most of present day New York State, and parts of Quebec and Ontario in Canada.

Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin would say in later years that they were inspired by the Iroquois Confederacy when fashioning the American Constitution. They acknowledged the Confederacies influence on two of the corner stones of the document. Free Speech and Free Elections. Principles like free speech and elections were key ingredients of the Iroquois Confederacy dating back to the 15th century. This was when the legendary Hiawatha convinced the 5 tribes to work together to form the Iroquois Confederacy. The Tuscarora’s joined the Confederacy in the 17th Century.
