Bat Masterson Poster – William Barclay Masterson.
In his early twenties Masterson was serving as an army scout, out of Sweetwater, Texas, when he got in a fight over a dancehall girl. His adversary was killed with a bullet thru the heart, the luckless girl died as well, and Masterson was badly wounded in the leg which caused him to limp thereafter.
Masterson took to using a large silver knobbed cane to assist his stride, and when he took up his trade of being a Peace Officer, the cane was often used on an unruly cowboy’s head. In recognition of the new sport of Baseball, he was nicknamed Bat because of his “batting” of skulls with his walking stick.
Friend to Luke Short, Charley Bassett, the Earps and Doc Holliday, Bat was often seen in his later years at boxing matches in the New York area as a sportswriter for the New York Morning Telegraph.
Bat Masterson was a Western TV series that ran from 1958-1961 and starred Gene Barry as the always well dressed Bat. He travelled the west, wooing women and defending the wrongly accused with his wit and cane, more often than with his six shooter. The Bat Masterson Show was good fun and Barry always had a smile on his face and a solution to any predicament.
