COMPLETE SERIES! THE WILD WILD WEST WITH ROBERT CONRAD AND ROSS MARTIN
Such a fun series with something for everyone. Jim West (Robert Conrad) and Artemus Gordon, (Ross Martin) are the first Secret Service Agents, and they report only to President Ulysses S. Grant. They are given their own steam engine and a fabulously outfitted rail car, and travel the West investigating crimes and espionage. A great family show it has the gadgetry of James Bond, and cartoon villains like the original Batman series. The bright costuming started in the second season, and the almost cartoon colors were done to take advantage of the new technology of color television. Combine that with incredible costuming and deductive story lines, and you have a winning combination.
Lonesome Dove, The Series, and Lonesome Dove The Outlaw Years, Starring Eric McCormack
Before there was DeadWood, before there was Hell On Wheels, there was Lonesome Dove The Outlaw Years.
Lots of recognizable names and faces in the guest stars, as well as many young and upcomers guested on these series from the 1990s. Including Adam Beach (Flags of our Fathers) and Deadpool himself, a very young Ryan Reynolds. Plus Brett The Hitman Hart has a recurring role in The Outlaw Years. Just one thing. It never seems to rain, yet the streets are always muddy. Huh?
The Big Valley Starring Barbra Stanwick, Linda Evans, Lee Majors, Peter Breck and Richard Long
Aging movie star Barbra Stanwick is cast as Victoria Barkley matriarch of the Barkley Clan in this western series. Victoria seems to be just as hard on her husbands, as Ben Cartwright was on his wives. . .being maybe the first single mom on TV! Produced to compete with Bonanza in the ratings this series produced 2 mega stars of the small screen; Lee Majors and Linda Evans.
Majors of course went on to become the biggest TV star of his time in the series the Six Million Dollar Man, and the gorgeous Linda Evans, would become synonymous with beauty and class in her role as Krystle Carrington on the smash hit DYNASTY in the 1980s.
Daniel Boone starring Fess Parker
Walt Disney himself cast Fess Parker as Daniel Boone and Daniel Boone aired from 1964-1970 and was a pet project of Walts’. Disney, was a stickler for historically correct weapons, sets, and wardrobe. Good acting, great side kicks, recognizable guest stars, coupled with strong story lines, many anchored in the reality of frontier life, made this a great family series for the time. Maybe for any times. . . .Fess Parker has to be the most likeable fella ever!
Dick Powell’s Zane Grey Theater
Movie star Dick Powell, introduces each 30 minute episode with some interesting trivia about the tools of the cowboys and the type of people that used them. Once the episode starts they are fast paced and feature many of the movie stars of the day. Which is a tribute to Dick Powell for getting the likes of Jack Palance, Hedy Lamarr, Edmond Obrien, Walter Brennan, Anne Bancroft, Ceasar Romero, Thomas Mitchell, Walter Pidgeon, E.G. Robinson, Robert Ryan. . .and young stars Robert Vaughn, James Coburn, James Drury, Nick Adams, Dennis Hopper, Rita Moreno. . . .and on it goes.
The Westerner, directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring Brian Keith
Only 12 episodes but each one is a gem. The first adult themed western on TV and still might be the best. Sam Peckinpah revolutionized the way violence was shown on film, and was one of the premier action directors of the 1960s and 70s. Directing film brilliance like, The Wild Bunch, The Getaway, Straw Dogs, and The Killer Elite are just a few. Peckinpah who started his film career as a writer, was a volatile, hard drinking ex-marine who resented never seeing any action in the Second World War.
THE WESTERNER Episode 12 HAND ON THE GUN stands out for it’s realism, brilliant acting and great dialogue. The best of the best!
Shane Series, starring David Carradine and Jill Ireland
Another one season western with 17 episodes from 1966. The show featured a young up and coming star in David Carradine, and Jill Ireland, other young up and comers as guest stars, like Warren Oats, and Robert Duvall. Shane actually only lasted half a season, as it was up against one of the biggest shows on TV, at the time. On Saturday nights Shane was cannon fodder for The Jackie Gleason Show. It never had a chance.
Wild West Tech Hosted By Keith and David Carradine is part of our Documentaries series
Keith Carradine’s portrayal of Wild Bill Hickok in the brilliant HBO series, DEADWOOD, stands out as one of the best ever. So, it seems fitting he host the episode on the tools of the Gunslingers. These episodes are fast paced, and quite informative, great for anyone that loves old west technology. Along with the two episodes of Wild West Tech, there’s also a 4 part series on The Great Indian Wars.
Death Valley Days
Based on real stories and legends of the west, this series started out on radio in the 1930s, and was sponsored by a laundry aid and cleaner called Borax. “Strong as any 20 mule team“, was the catch phrase, and is what they showed at the start of each episode. The mule teams were also what originally brought the mined mineral, borax, out of Death Valley, California in the 19th century.
