OLD WEST COWBOY HATS
The Cowboy Hat defines the wearer
A traditional cowboy prized his hat above all things – with good reason. It was often worth a month or two’s wages – and that made it very expensive. The cowboy likely spent hours personalizing the hat with creases to the crown and molding the brim – that made it his.
A 19th century cowboy would go to hell and back to retrieve a misplaced old west hat and it was seldom further than an arm’s length away.
Old Fashion Quality
You won’t find these western hats at your nearest mall. Many of the brim shapes or crowns may look familiar, may even be the same, but they are poor imitations, cookie-cutter designs; mass produced and available virtually anywhere. Don’t follow the herd – strike out on your own with a classic custom western hat from The Last Best West.
The Last Best Cowboy Hat
We start with the best fur-felt hat body available – made in the USA – and fashion as fine a hand-made western hat as you can find anywhere, for any price.
Made to order. Made to last. Made in America by the Cowboys at The Last Best West.

A custom cowboy movie hat from Lonesome Dove (1989) Our take on the hat style worn by Tommy Lee Jones The Tommy Lee Jones cowboy hat from Lonesome Dove. The Captain Call Handmade Hat is like the character simple, unrefined, and basic. A classic Boss of the Plains with a heavy dip front and back on the bound brim.

augustus custom handmade hat style from the classic mini-series, Lonesome Dove (1989) Loveable old Ranger Augustus McCrae is the scalawag that keeps the Hat Creek Cattle Company loose and is a great counter balance to the salty Woodrow Call. This style of old west crown with it's 3 pinch cavalry creasing was first called the "Tom Mix" after the early movie star, and then became known as "The Gus" crease because of Lonesome Dove. This is a great look for both men and women!

Our take on the Virgil Cole Movie Hat - from Appaloosa {2008} Our Virgil Cole Hat is the cowboy hat worn by Ed Harris in 2008s excellent Western Film, Appaloosa. This is also the hat with only minor changes (a front pinch to the crown and a bit more roll to the brim) that Mr. Harris wears as The Man in Black, in HBOs new western hit, Westworld. It's almost like the character is patterned after a mean and vicious Virgil Cole. If you would like The Man in Black version, add the request to the PRODUCTION NOTES. The style is a an adjusted version of a basic Boss of the Plains style cowboy hat. Add a homburg dent to the crown and give a nice dip to the front of the brim and there she be. Pretty close to a Fort Bragg version of the US Cavalry Hat from the 1870s.

You may want to add one of our horse hair hat bands to complete the look.

Our version of the Doc Holliday Cowboy Hat - from Tombstone {1993} Doc's adversary amongst the Cow Boys, of course, was Johnny Ringo. So naturally the Doc Holliday Cowboy Hat is the opposite of Johnny Ringo's. The fedora working to the crown suggests culture and education, and the left turn up on the brim infers a dangerous bent to his personality. Also shown is a 20X sand colored Doc Holliday cowboy hat made for a theatre company in Nashville. Order yours today. Doc Holliday Cowboy Hat
