1969 was an interesting year for the western movie. It has become some what of a benchmark because of the contrasting films True Grit and the Wild Bunch. True Grit was one of the last western spectacles made by the Marion Morrison generation, compare that to the Wild Bunch, Sam Peckinpah’s ultra violent tribute to the Mexican Revolution.
Before Peckinpah directed large Hollywood blockbusters, he cut his teeth on TV Westerns in the 1950s and 60s. He directed many memorable episodes of Wanted Dead or Alive, Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, Have Gun Will Travel, Zane Grey Theater and lots of others.
Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch was one of the first movies with blood splatters and other graphic violence and singled a change to more gritty and realistic representations of violence in the movies.
